The Spanish food ecosystem has been becoming more international at a fast clip and emulating global recognition in pursuit of innovative technologies.
Heavy weight European VC's are more focused than ever on tech startups in Spain. Niklas Zennström, founder of VC Atomico told Conco Días: "I come to Spain every year..the level of ambition of the projects is increasing”.
Spanish startups and their solutions are making their international mark. Like in the ever growing plant-based space with Heura; one of Europe’s fastest-growing plant-based meat brands, with products now present in 13 countries around the world and soon breaking the UK . “We are changing our mindset in order to think like a global company that happens to be based in Spain.”
Other startups are focusing their efforts on the European map. Smartfooding, the Catalan online marketplace for eco-responsible and vegan food products announced last year it was gunning for the French market, an operation made possible after raising over €750,000 in investment and building a portfolio of over 3,000 organic food products that meet the growing needs of consumers.
This demonstrates the importance of the development of local and regional actors, and the appreciation of small producers passionate about Spanish agriculture in surrounding countries who offer high quality products with organic certification, allowing them to sell their production directly to the final consumer, in turn boosting the local European economy as a whole.
